  • Campus Safety Message
The University of Florida Police Department would like to provide an update regarding a series of hoax email threats issued to different departments at the University of Florida. As of 3 p.m. on Monday, multiple offices throughout UF continued to receive similar, if not identical, hoax email threats or calls. The campuses and units affected have expanded beyond the Gainesville campus, to include UF Health Jacksonville. Each campus or unit affected by these threats is working with local law enforcement agencies. None of the threats received at the Gainesville campus have been found to be credible. Higher-education institutions across the nation are often the target of hoax threats, including UF. Despite the pervasiveness of these hoax threats, UFPD takes all reports seriously and asks the campus community to do the same. UFPD encourages the UF community to remain vigilant and report anything that may seem suspicious to police. Members of the Gainesville campus should call 352-392-1111, while UF locations throughout the state should immediately contact local law enforcement. In the event of an actual incident that poses an immediate threat to the health and safety of the campus community, an emergency notification will be issued through the UF Alert System.

After contacting the reporting person, it was determined that the incident happened on February 6, 2026, at her resident hall. This is currently an ongoing investigation. The University of Florida strongly believes that no person is responsible for harm inflicted by another person. Be alert to people pressuring you or others to use alcohol or other drugs. The University of Florida Police Department would like to share information regarding an incident that prompted calls and reports of a suspected gunman at the Gainesville campus. On Thursday, Oct. 30, around 11 a.m. UFPD dispatchers received reports that a man was carrying a firearm in the area of Little Hall. As officers searched the area, a person called to report that he believed he met the description of reports shared on social media of the suspected gunman. The person explained he was dressed as a sci-fi character for Halloween and was carrying a water pistol as a prop. UFPD confirmed the prop was a water pistol and that the individual did not intend to cause any harm or pose a threat to campus. UFPD would like to thank all who took the time to report this incident. A safe campus is a vigilant one. UFPD would also like to take this opportunity to remind the campus community to be prudent when selecting props and attire for Halloween and other cosplay-type of events. Be safe when celebrating this weekend, and if you see anything suspicious, please call 911.
