The University of Florida Police Department would like to share information regarding an incident that prompted calls and reports of a suspected gunman at the Gainesville campus.
On Thursday, Oct. 30, around 11 a.m. UFPD dispatchers received reports that a man was carrying a firearm in the area of Little Hall.
As officers searched the area, a person called to report that he believed he met the description of reports shared on social media of the suspected gunman. The person explained he was dressed as a sci-fi character for Halloween and was carrying a water pistol as a prop.
UFPD confirmed the prop was a water pistol and that the individual did not intend to cause any harm or pose a threat to campus.
UFPD would like to thank all who took the time to report this incident. A safe campus is a vigilant one.
UFPD would also like to take this opportunity to remind the campus community to be prudent when selecting props and attire for Halloween and other cosplay-type of events. Be safe when celebrating this weekend, and if you see anything suspicious, please call 911.
