Timely Warning (21-05)

Crimes: Rape, Attempted Rape, Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Kidnapping

Under the Clery Act, the University of Florida issues Timely Warning messages regarding Clery Act crimes which pose a serious and continuing threat to the campus community.

On Friday, September 10th, 2021, the University of Florida Police Department became aware of two incidents that occurred in the early morning hours of 09/10/2021 that were reported to the Gainesville Police Department. Due to the close proximity to campus, this information is being shared with the campus community.

An attempted rape, aggravated assault, robbery, and kidnapping occurred around the 2300 block of SW 23rd St at approximately 12:00AM on 9/10/2021. The victim reported that while jogging in the area of 2300 SW 23rd, she passed the suspect on the sidewalk. The unknown male suspect charged and tackled her, choked her nearly unconscious, threatened to rape and kill her, and then forced her into a “dark colored sedan”. Then the suspect snatched the victim’s cell phone from her. The victim managed to escape and get help. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6ft tall, thin but muscular build, curly short hair, wearing khaki shorts and a dark colored t-shirt.

A rape and robbery occurred around the 2800 block of SW 35th Place at approximately 3:30AM on 9/10/2021. The unknown male suspect approached the victim as she was entering her apartment. The unknown male suspect grabbed the victim, told her that he had a gun, and pulled her down the stairs and into the wooded area. At that time the suspect raped the victim. The suspect threw the victim’s phone over a fence and fled on foot. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6ft tall, slim build, with dreads.

The University of Florida strongly believes that no person is responsible for harm inflicted by another person.

Reporting to law enforcement is encouraged by calling 9-1-1 or through the GatorSafe app.

Criminal incidents can be reported to UF CSAs who are designated, trained, and mandatory reporters under the Clery Act when victims chose not to report to law enforcement.
